Suitability Equestrian Pattern
#7570: This pattern includes nine standard hood sizes to fit from a small miniature horse up to a warmblood. Hoods can be made from single or double layers of material or made using insulation (triple layer). The extra small sizes each have a wide surcingle at the throat and hook-and-loop tape closures. The four larger sizes each have one wide strap at the throat and five straps. These straps can be fastened with either surcingle buckles or snap hooks. Guidelines are also given for using hook-and-loop tape closures on the larger sizes. The hood attaches to a blanket or sheet with elastic straps. The pattern also includes five stretch hood sizes. The stretch hood is made from spandex (Lycra TM) blend fabrics. It has a fitted face, a zipper, and an elastic girth strap with hook-and-loop tape.

STANDARD HOOD FABRICS AND NOTIONS

This hood will normally be made from the same materials as the blanket.  For single layer hoods pre-quilted and pre-lined fabrics are commonly used.  For two layer hoods use heavyweight nylon or cotton-type fabrics for the outer layer and fleece or blanket-type materials for the inner layer.  For insulated hoods use heavyweight outerwear nylon for the outer layer, insulation such as needlepunch for the middle, and ripstop nylon for the lining.  For straps use nylon or polypropylene webbing.  Seat belting also works well for 2” wide surcingles.  For binding hood edges use nylon foldover braid or other bias bindings.  For seam tape use braid or twill tape.  The eye and ear holes are bound with cotton bias tape.  Another idea that works really well is to use strips of Polartec fleece.

The extra small sizes are fastened with strips of 2” wide hook-and-loop tape.  Sizes SM-XL call for surcingle buckles and sliders OR snap hooks, D-rings, and sliders.  Guidelines are also given for using hook-and-loop tape for the larger sizes.

STRETCH HOOD FABRICS

We tested this pattern with several different types of swimwear fabric containing spandex (the generic term for Lycra).  The fabric you use MUST contain spandex.  Swimwear fabric generally has more lengthwise stretch than crosswise stretch.  For this pattern we recommend fabric with at least 100% lengthwise stretch (4” of fabric stretches to 8”) and 75% crosswise stretch (4” of fabric stretches to 7”).  Because of the width required, Sizes LG and XL can only be made with 60” wide fabric.

Use a one-way separating molded tooth zipper.

FITTING

Fitting instructions and charts are given in the pattern instructions, but the average horse would take a MD or LG hood.
